What Is a SKU, and Why Should You Care?

A SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) is the short code you assign to each distinct product you sell - "TSH/BLU/LRG" for a large blue t-shirt, for example. It's how you, your team, and your systems refer to a product without ambiguity. Once every item has a consistent SKU, counting stock, processing orders, and writing invoices all get faster and less error-prone.

SKU vs. barcode - what's the difference?

A SKU is your internal code - you invent it, you control its structure, and it's readable by humans. A barcode (like a UPC) is a standardized, machine-readable number assigned externally and shared across every retailer selling that product.

You can run a small business entirely on SKUs without ever touching barcodes. Most do.

What makes a good SKU?

How this SKU generator works

  1. Set the character count per segment and pick a separator symbol
  2. Enter the item name and up to three attributes (size, color, material...)
  3. Click Add to generate the SKU - or Add & Retain to keep the values for quick variations
  4. Repeat for your whole catalog, then Export as CSV to import anywhere

Who needs SKUs?

Makers & crafters

Even a small catalog of handmade variants benefits from systematic naming.

Pick a consistent structure (item name plus 1-3 attributes like size or color), set how many characters each part should use, and apply it to every product the same way. This tool does the truncating and formatting automatically.

No. A SKU is your own internal, human-readable code that you control. A UPC/barcode is a standardized external number shared across retailers. Small businesses can operate on SKUs alone.

Yes - the Export as CSV button downloads your full list with item names, attributes, and generated SKUs, ready to import into a spreadsheet, store platform, or invoicing tool.

Only as many as you need to make each variant unique - usually one to three (like size, color, material). More than that makes codes long and error-prone.
