Burn rate and runway are two of the most important numbers a young business can track, and two of the most often ignored until it is too late. They answer a simple, vital question: how long can you keep going at your current pace?
What burn rate means
Your burn rate is how much cash your business spends each month beyond what it brings in. If you spend more than you earn, you are burning cash, and the burn rate is the size of that monthly gap.
There are two versions worth knowing:
- Gross burn is your total monthly spend.
- Net burn is your monthly spend minus your monthly income. Net burn is the one that really matters, because income offsets the drain.
What runway means
Runway is how many months you can last before the cash runs out, at your current net burn. The math is simple:
Runway = cash in the bank ÷ monthly net burn.
If you have 60,000 in the bank and a net burn of 10,000 a month, you have six months of runway. That number tells you how long you have to either grow income, cut costs, or raise money.
Why it matters
Runway turns a vague worry into a deadline you can plan around. Six months of runway is a very different situation from eighteen, and knowing which you are in changes every decision: how fast to hire, how aggressively to spend on growth, when to start a fundraise.
Work it out in seconds
You do not need a finance background to track this. Our free burn rate calculator turns your cash balance and monthly numbers into a clear runway figure, so you always know where you stand.
Extend your runway with faster cash in
One of the simplest ways to extend runway is to get paid faster. Money owed to you is money not in your bank funding your runway. Tightening up invoicing, sending promptly, adding easy online payment, and letting reminders chase late payers, pulls cash in sooner and stretches your runway without cutting a thing. See how Billbooks helps small businesses get paid faster.
The short version
- Burn rate is your monthly cash gap. Track net burn.
- Runway is cash divided by net burn, in months.
- Runway is a deadline that should shape your decisions.
- Faster payments extend runway for free.
Know your runway, and you are never surprised by the one number that decides how long you get to keep building.
