Billbooks vs Stripe Invoicing

Stripe Invoicing has no monthly fee and takes a percentage of every invoice that gets paid, so the bill grows with your revenue. Billbooks charges one flat monthly price for the whole business whatever you invoice. Which is cheaper depends entirely on how much you bill.

A percentage of your revenue, or a fixed monthly cost?

This is not a feature argument, it is a pricing-shape argument. Stripe Invoicing costs nothing until an invoice is paid and then takes a cut of it, which is the right shape when invoicing is occasional and the wrong shape when it is how the business runs. Billbooks costs the same every month whether you send four invoices or four hundred. Card processing is paid on both sides, because a Billbooks customer connects their own Stripe, so it cancels out and the real difference is the percentage against the flat fee.

Stripe Invoicing rates as of 30 October 2026, from their own pricing page: Starter 0.4% per paid invoice, Plus 0.5% per paid invoice including quotes, and custom pricing on request for businesses with large invoice amounts. Their page states that Stripe Invoicing has no fixed fees or setup costs, but that Stripe Payments pricing will apply. It does not publish a free invoice allowance or a monthly minimum. Card processing rates are charged separately and vary by country, so no processing figure is quoted here; read them on Stripe's own page for your country. The worked examples above are the published invoicing percentage applied to the amount invoiced, and exclude processing because it is paid on both sides. Where their pricing page does not mention a feature, no claim is made about it here. Prices can change. Sources: stripe.com/invoicing/pricing, billbooks.com/pricing.

Why people pick Billbooks for invoicing

The cost stops tracking the revenue

A flat monthly price for the whole business. Doubling what you invoice does not change the bill, which is the whole difference between a subscription and a percentage.

The work around the invoice

Quotes with digital signatures, payment reminders, recurring invoices, expenses and reports, rather than the invoice and the payment on their own.

Not tied to one processor

Connect your own Stripe, or PayPal, or another gateway. The invoicing does not come from the same company that takes the payment.

Where Stripe Invoicing suits you better

If you invoice occasionally or for small amounts, Stripe Invoicing is cheaper and this page will not pretend otherwise. At 0.4% a paid invoice with no monthly fee, anything under roughly $2,000 invoiced a month costs less than Billbooks Basic, and a month in which you invoice nothing costs nothing at all. It is also the better answer when the billing happens inside a product rather than against a client list: the API, webhooks and the rest of the Stripe stack are built for subscription and usage billing, and nothing here replaces that. And because Stripe is the processor, the invoice, the payment and the reconciliation sit in one system with nothing to connect. The case for Billbooks starts when invoicing is steady, when you want the monthly cost to stay flat as the revenue grows, and when you need the quoting, chasing, expenses and reporting around the invoice rather than the invoice alone.

One flat price for the business, whatever you invoice.

Questions

Is Billbooks cheaper than Stripe Invoicing? +

Only above a certain volume. Stripe Invoicing charges 0.4% of each paid invoice on Starter with no monthly fee, so the break-even against Billbooks Basic at $7.95 a month is about $1,988 invoiced a month. Below that Stripe is cheaper. At $10,000 a month their fee is around $40 against our $7.95, and the gap widens from there.

What does Stripe Invoicing do that Billbooks does not? +

It is the payment processor itself, so there is nothing to connect and the money, the invoice and the reconciliation live in one place. It also has the developer surface: an API, webhooks and the rest of the Stripe stack for subscription and usage billing. If you are billing from inside a product rather than from a client list, that is the right tool.

Should I use Stripe Invoicing or Billbooks? +

Use Stripe Invoicing if you invoice occasionally, bill small amounts, or already run your product billing on Stripe. Use Billbooks if you invoice steadily and want the monthly cost to stay the same as the revenue grows, with expenses, quotes, reminders and reports around the invoicing rather than just the invoice itself.

Does Stripe Invoicing charge a monthly fee? +

No. Their pricing page lists no fixed fees and no setup costs, and charges only when an invoice is actually paid. Unpaid, draft and voided invoices cost nothing. Stripe Payments processing is charged separately on top, at rates that vary by country.

How much does Stripe Invoicing cost? +

There is no monthly fee. Stripe Invoicing charges 0.4% of each paid invoice on Starter and 0.5% on Plus, which adds quotes, with custom pricing available for businesses invoicing large amounts. Stripe Payments processing is charged separately on top at rates that vary by country. Figures read from their pricing page on 30 October 2026.

At what point does Stripe Invoicing get more expensive than Billbooks? +

At about $1,988 invoiced a month, which is $7.95 divided by the 0.4% Starter rate. Below that the percentage is smaller than the Billbooks Basic subscription, and above it the subscription is smaller. At $50,000 invoiced a month the Starter fee is around $200 against $7.95. Processing is excluded because it is paid on both sides.

Does Stripe Invoicing charge for unpaid invoices? +

No. The fee applies to paid invoices, so drafts, voided invoices and invoices a client never pays carry no invoicing charge. That is part of why it is the cheaper option at low volume: you pay only when you are actually paid.

Does Billbooks work with Stripe? +

Yes. You connect your own Stripe account and card payments are available on every plan with no plan gate, so the recipient pays the invoice the same way. You pay Stripe their processing rate directly, and Billbooks takes no percentage of the invoice on top.

Is Stripe Invoicing good for a small business? +

It is good for a small business that invoices occasionally, bills modest amounts, or is already on Stripe for everything else. It is a weaker fit if invoicing is the main way the business gets paid, because the cost rises with every pound you bill, and if you want quoting, chasing, expenses and reporting in the same place rather than just issuing the invoice.

Does Billbooks charge a percentage of invoices? +

No. There is no per-invoice fee and no cut of the invoice value. The plan price covers the plan, and the limits are on users, clients and projects rather than on what you bill. Card processing still goes to whichever gateway you connect, at that gateway's own rate.

Is there a free trial? +

Yes, 30 days with no credit card. The free calculators and generators need no account at all, so you can work the numbers out and send a real invoice before signing up for anything.
