GST-ready invoicing for Australian businesses

Australian invoicing means tax invoices that meet the ATO rules, with your ABN and the right GST treatment, plus easy ways for clients to pay. Billbooks handles the compliance so you get paid without the paperwork.

Built for how you invoice

GST done right

Billbooks applies 10% GST and shows it correctly, either as a separate line or a total-includes-GST statement.

Your ABN on every invoice

Your ABN is printed on each tax invoice, so clients can claim their GST credit and there is no 47% withholding.

Get paid faster

Add payment options and automatic reminders so clients pay by card or bank transfer and you follow up less.

GST and your tax invoices

GST is 10% on most goods and services in Australia. You must register for GST once your turnover reaches AUD 75,000, or AUD 150,000 for not-for-profits. Once registered, you issue tax invoices that show your ABN and the GST, either as a separate amount or with a statement that the total price includes GST. For invoices of AUD 1,000 or more you must also show the buyer identity or ABN. Displaying your ABN matters: if you do not quote it, a business customer may have to withhold 47% of the payment. Billbooks puts your ABN and the correct GST on every invoice.

What an ATO tax invoice must include

For sales under AUD 1,000, the ATO requires a valid tax invoice to show these. Billbooks includes them automatically.

Questions

When do I have to register for GST in Australia? +

You must register for GST once turnover reaches AUD 75,000, or AUD 150,000 for not-for-profits. GST is 10% on most goods and services, and once registered you issue tax invoices showing your ABN and the GST amount.

What must an Australian tax invoice include? +

An Australian tax invoice must show your ABN, the words tax invoice, the issue date, your business name, a description of what was supplied, and the GST either as a separate amount or as a statement that the total includes GST.

Does Billbooks lodge my BAS or GST return? +

No. Billbooks issues compliant Australian tax invoices showing your ABN and GST, but it does not lodge your Business Activity Statement. You or your accountant do that with the ATO. Billbooks is invoicing software, not a lodgement service.

Can I invoice overseas clients from Australia? +

Yes. Billbooks invoices in the client currency while you continue reporting in Australian dollars, with the exchange rate recorded at the invoice date. Exports of goods and services are generally GST-free, and Billbooks lets you set the tax treatment per line.

Do I have to show my ABN on an invoice? +

Yes. An Australian tax invoice must show your ABN. Without it a business customer is generally required to withhold 47% of the payment, so a missing ABN is not a formatting problem, it directly reduces what you get paid.

What if my sale is under AUD 82.50? +

For taxable sales under AUD 82.50 including GST a customer does not need a tax invoice to claim a credit, though many still ask for one. Billbooks issues a compliant tax invoice regardless of value.

Do I charge GST on exports from Australia? +

Exports of goods and most services to overseas customers are generally GST-free, provided the conditions are met. Billbooks sets the tax treatment per line, so a single invoice can carry GST-free export lines alongside taxable domestic ones.

Does Billbooks create ATO-compliant tax invoices? +

Yes. Billbooks produces tax invoices with the words "Tax invoice", your ABN, the correct GST treatment, and the buyer details required on invoices of AUD 1,000 or more.

Why does my ABN need to be on the invoice? +

A tax invoice is not valid without your ABN, and your client cannot claim a GST credit. If you do not quote an ABN, a business customer may have to withhold 47% of the payment. Billbooks shows your ABN on every invoice.

What is the GST registration threshold? +

You must register for GST once your turnover reaches AUD 75,000, or AUD 150,000 for not-for-profits.

How do clients pay? +

Connect a payment gateway so clients pay by card or bank transfer straight from the invoice, and add automatic reminders so you get paid on time.

What does it cost? +

A flat monthly price with unlimited invoices, and a 30-day free trial with no credit card required.
