Invoicing built for how US businesses get paid

The US has no federal sales tax, and there is no mandated invoice format for most B2B sales. What matters is a clean, professional invoice that makes it easy for clients to pay by ACH or card, and reminders that chase the payment for you. Billbooks does exactly that.

Built for how you invoice

Get paid by ACH or card

Add payment options so clients pay straight from the invoice, and connect your own gateway to keep processing costs down.

Chase Net-30 without the awkwardness

Automatic reminders nudge clients as the due date nears and passes, so you never have to send the follow-up yourself.

Sales tax where it applies

Apply the correct sales-tax rate for the states where you collect, and leave it off where the sale is not taxable.

Sales tax in the US: state and local

Unlike most countries, the US has no federal VAT or GST. Sales tax is set at the state and local level, so combined rates range from 0% to over 10% depending on the address. Five states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon, though Alaska allows local sales taxes. If you sell across state lines you may cross a state economic nexus threshold and have to collect its sales tax. Billbooks lets you add the right rate to an invoice where you need to, and leave it off where you do not.

What a professional US invoice includes

The US does not mandate a specific invoice format for most sales, but a clear, professional invoice should include these. Billbooks builds them in.

Questions

Does the US require a specific invoice format?

No. For most business-to-business sales there is no legally mandated invoice format. A professional invoice should still include your details, a unique number and date, itemized lines, any sales tax, the total, and clear payment terms, all of which Billbooks handles.

Can I add sales tax to invoices?

Yes. You can apply the correct sales-tax rate to an invoice for the states where you collect. Rates vary by state and locality, so check your obligations in each state where you have nexus.

How do clients pay?

Connect a payment gateway so clients pay by card or ACH straight from the invoice. Billbooks lets you bring your own gateway, so your processing rate stays in your control.

Does it help at 1099 time?

Yes. Clean, numbered invoices and reports make it easier to reconcile with the 1099-NEC forms your clients issue. Note the 1099-NEC reporting threshold rose to $2,000 for 2026 payments onward, up from $600.

What does it cost?

A flat monthly price with unlimited invoices, and a 30-day free trial with no credit card required.
